Diabetes Prevention

The real solution to Diabetes prevention is to know if you are Pre-Diabetic and intervene
to not only stop the progression to Diabetes but to begin the reversal of this dangerous
condition. This was proven in a landmark federally funded study of 3,234 participants
that began in 1996 and ended in 2001 where a diverse group of Americans who were
overweight with impaired glucose tolerance and at risk of developing full blown Diabetes
proved they could successfully undertake intervention to delay the onset of Diabetes or
prevent it altogether.

In effect the study showed that many of the 57 million Americans at high risk for
developing type 2 diabetes could be spared some or all of the suffering from the
progression from Pre-Diabetes to Diabetes. By contrast, if the pre-diabetic population
did nothing to change behavior, they would in all likelihood develop type 2 diabetes
within 10 years; possibly go on to have heart attacks or strokes’ potentially lose their
limbs, eyesight and kidney functioning; and probably die years before their time.

What is most troublesome is the belief by some that if they become a diabetic they will
simply take a drug that will manage their disease. Unfortunately, not only do these drugs
have severe side effects but for the post part they do not stop the severe complications
from developing that include:
• Cardiovascular Disease
• High Blood Pressure
• Blindness
• Kidney Disease
• Nervous System Complications
• Amputations
• Liver Disease
• Alzheimer’s

Type 2 Diabetes, for the vast majority of people is a preventable disease and is caused by
unhealthy lifestyle habits.

According to the CDC, 1 out of 4 Americans, as of 2008 were either diabetic or pre-
diabetic. Most of those who are pre-diabetic have no idea they have their condition.
For years people are pre-diabetic before they finally become diabetic. During this pre-
diabetic stage, it is much easier to correct the underlying reasons why people become
diabetic.

However, the standard of care for people who are pre-diabetic is to take no action at all
until they become diabetic, at which point diabetic medication is recommended. The
medication does not address the root cause as to why people became diabetic in the first
place.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projecting on Friday Octorber 22. 2010
that “ A third of the U.S. adults could be diabetic by 2050”.

Make a change now. Take the challenge the next time you are in my office and find out
if you are pre-diabetic and how to prevent diabetes.
